Affiliate companies of Marathon Trading are Marathon Distributors, the leading logistics provider to the pharmacies in Cyprus, Kapakiotis & Papaellinas Ltd that distribute GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals, and Alector Pharmaceuticals Ltd that distribute AstraZeneca pharmaceuticals.

Marathon Trading is directly responsible for the sales and marketing of a range of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, OTC, food supplements, among others. Companies under the current portfolio include Aboca, Aspen Pharma, Fysioline, Medela, Novum Pharma, Optimum Medical, SFI Health, SIGG, Terumo, Zooki, among others.

Marathon Trading is also the exclusive distributor to the pharmacies for Unilever Cyprus, as well as Argosy, distributing well-known brands under the Reckitt Benckiser Hellas S.A. group.

Marathon Trading comprises of a dedicated and highly trained team of pharmacy and medical representatives, who detail the company’s portfolio of products to the health care professionals across Cyprus.

Brands under the Marathon Trading portfolio are present in all 550 pharmacies across Cyprus. Marathon Trading also supplies leading private clinics, analysts and physiotherapists with medical supplies and disposables, as well medical devices.

Today Managing Director of Marathon Trading is Helena Kapakiotis, a third generation family member and the grand-daughter of the founder of the company, Ioannis M. Kapakiotis.

Marathon Trading Firm was established in 1960 by Ioannis M Kapakiotis as a marketing and distribution company of pharmaceutical and hospital supplies for the Cyprus market. It commenced operations representing manufacturers Calmic Ltd UK, Pharmaton SA Switzerland and Terumo Corporation of Japan.

George Kapakiotis joined the business in 1968. Ioannis M Kapakiotis & Son Ltd (IMK) was established in 1976, trading under the registered name of Marathon Trading. The company’s product portfolio extended to include food supplements, medical devices and other pharmacy related products.

IMK appointed sole agent for The Wellcome Foundation Ltd

IMK appointed sole agent for ICI Pharmaceuticals (Zeneca)

1996

Following the takeover of Wellcome by Glaxo, IMK appointed sole distributor for GlaxoWellcome

2000

Following the merger between Astra and Zeneca, IMK and Astra agents, C G Papaloisou Ltd (CGP), form Alector Pharmaceuticals Ltd to market and distribute AstraZeneca pharmaceuticals

2000

IMK and CGP establish Marathon Distributors Ltd (MDL) to distribute products marketed by Marathon Trading, Alector and CGP to pharmacies, hospitals and medical profession

2001

The merger between GlaxoWellcome and Smithkline Beecham leads to further consolidation. IMK and C.A.Papaellinas Ltd (CAP), form Kapakiotis and Papaellinas Ltd (KP) to distribute GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceuticals

2009

MDL moves to its new distribution center at Latsia on the outskirts of Nicosia

2010

MDL merges with Pharmnet Ltd, following approval by the Cyprus Protection of Competition Authority, to form the Island’s largest distribution company with 38% share of the private sector pharmaceutical market.
As part of its CSR activities, Marathon Trading supports the Cyprus based NGO Sophia For Children and contributes to the organization's main activities and goals. Marathon Trading, with Special Edition SIGG bottles exclusively designed for Sophia for Children, gives all proceeds from the sale to providing drinking water to children living in areas severely affected by Climate Change.
Sophia For Children was established in 2008 by Cypriot volunteers, with an aim to fight poverty and its repercussions, mainly concentrating on the most vulnerable social group, that of children.

The main activities are concentrated on children living in Kenya, while their operations aim to provide safety, board and lodging, healthcare and most importantly education, focusing on abandoned and abused children, HIV positive, as well as children held captive in juvenile prisons. In the Turkana desert, an area greatly affected by climate change and extreme drought, the Sophia for Children supports communities with clean water and food while maintaining mechanical water-wells for clean water for both people and livestock.
